UAE Ambassador H.E. Dr. Ahmed A.R. AlBanna attended Dubai Chamber and Dubai Startup Hub Roadshow to India

New Delhi | June 24, 2019

H.E. Dr. Ahmed A.R. AlBanna, Ambassador of the UAE to India attended the roadshow organized by Dubai Startup Hub, an initiative of Dubai Chamber, and Dubai Technology Entrepreneur Campus (Dtec), a wholly-owned tech-startup hub by Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority, on 24 June 2019 in New Delhi. Mr Ahmad Alfalahi, UAE Commercial Attaché to India accompanied H.E. Dr. Ahmed AlBanna for the event.

The roadshow provided a platform for Indian startups to network with key stakeholders within Dubai’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and learn about the competitive advantages that the emirate offers.

The initiative also aims to identify and attract high-potential startups from India that offer cutting-edge solutions that can be adapted in the Dubai market and support the city’s strategic plans to become a global innovation hub and knowledge-based economy.

The roadshow was supported by Startup India and NASSCOM featured informative presentations from leading UAE public and private players that support startups in Dubai, including Dubai Startup Hub, Dtec, STEP Group and Startup Bootcamp, along with round table and panel discussions, and success stories from Indian startups that have benefited from the Dubai Startup Hub platform and built successful businesses in Dubai.

H.E. Dr. AlBanna in his keynote address spoke of the vibrant and growing relationship between UAE and India. He recalled that the two visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces to India in 2016 and 2017 and two visits of Prime Minister of India H.E. Narendra Modi to UAE witnessed the signing of many significant MoU.

H.E. UAE Ambassador added that UAE-India bilateral trade continue to soar and today it is worth US$60 billion, making India the second largest trading partner of the UAE, while the UAE is India’s third largest trading partner – after China and the US.

He informed the audience about the Startup and Innovation Strategy formulated by UAE and said that the country is willing to create a business model out of it. He invited Indian companies to come and participate in this. He mentioned the example of two successful Emirati Startup companies which are acquired by multinational giants. First one was Careem which was acquired by Uber for $3.1 billion and second one is Souq acquired by Amazon.

H.E. Dr. AlBanna encouraged Indian startup companies to leverage UAE’s position as a strategic trade hub to expand their reach in new markets specially Middle East and Sub-Saharan African markets.

Mr. Omar Khan, Director of International Offices at Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry said: “India is not only a market of strategic importance to Dubai and Dubai Chamber, it has also become a key source market for Dubai’s growing startup ecosystem. The country has become a test bed for blockchain, artificial intelligence and smart city solutions, and we have seen many Indian startups enter the Dubai market in recent years that have brought with them innovative business concepts.”

Mr. Hans Henrik Christensen, Vice President of Dtec, added that the entrepreneur hub’s participation in the Dubai Startup Hub Roadshow is inline with its plan to
target the Indian market. Dtec also participated in Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority’s roadshow in April 2019 targeting Indian investors and high-tech companies.

Dubai Chamber launched Dubai Startup Hub in 2016 as an online platform to connect startups, entrepreneurs, developers, venture capitalists and students, enabling them to learn about new opportunities and create new partnerships that stimulate economic growth.

New Delhi was the first leg of Dubai Startup Hub Roadshows to India and the next roadshow will take place in Bengaluru on 26 June.
