KEY POINTS DISCUSSED
A meeting was convened between H.E. Dr. Ahmad Al Banna, UAE Ambassador to India, Captain Aysha Alhameli, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates at ICAO, and Mr. Vijay Khanduja, Director, United Nations Economic and Social Division, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.
The primary agenda of the said meeting was to discuss matters of mutual cooperation pertaining to various international and multilateral platforms such as UN, UNESCO, WIPO, ISO, OPCW and ICAO.
During the meeting, the UAE side also sought the support of the Indian Government for the candidature of Captain Aysha Al Hameli, for the post of President of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
H.E. Dr. AlBanna and the Indian Official hailed the stronger than ever bilateral relations between the UAE and India, specifically after the recently concluded landmark visit by H.E. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India to the UAE.
Mr. Khanduja welcomed Captain AlHameli and applauded her efforts for being one of the female forerunners at the ICAO. Her strong credentials and longtime association of more than 11 years with ICAO, certainly situates her as a very strong candidate for the post of President of ICAO, he added.
Captain Al Hameli, for her part, thanked Mr. Khanduja for the meeting. She elaborated on the working and election procedure followed at the ICAO, and apprised that this year other than the UAE, there are two other countries contending for the post of the President of the Council, namely Italy and Krysgystan.
The President is elected by the council of 36 member states, represented by three blocs of 12 members each within the council, namely Part I, Part II and Part III.  The elections for the President are scheduled to be held in November 2019, Captain Al Hameli added.
The Indian Official, for his part, said that India has well received the credentials nomination of Captain Al Hameli for the said position, and reassured India’s support to the United Arab Emirates.
H.E. Al Banna, also noted the appointment of India’s new Representative to ICAO, and further assured the support of the UAE for the candidature of India as a Part II member states, in the forthcoming elections scheduled to be held during the 40th General Assembly of ICAO in Montreal, Canada from September 24 – October 04, 2019.
The Ambassador also discussed UAE’s candidatures at various other multilateral forums such as the UN, UNESCO, WIPO, ISO and OPCW, and handed over all the documents pertaining to the above, seeking the support of India for the same.
Mr. Khanduja made a note of the same, and for his part, assured the Ambassador that the necessary support shall be given to the UAE Government, after due internal consultations.
The meeting culminated on a positive note with both sides agreeing to work closely to support each other on various international and multilateral platforms.
