Coast Guard Collaboration

Attendee: HE Dr Ahmed AlBanna, UAE Ambassador to India, Colonel Ahmed Juma Alkaabi, UAE Military Attaché and DG K Natarajan, PTM, TM, Indian Coast Guard (ICG).

DG K Natarajan: Thank HE for his generosity and briefed him about the Indian Coastal Guard’s activities, such as safe guarding the ships from pirate attacks, protecting the coastal areas from drugs and human trafficking / smuggling, conducting rescue operation for the ships in distress in its coastal waters.

HE: Welcomed DG K Natarajan and enquired further about the possibilities of cooperation / collaboration between the two countries in order to safe guard the maritime economy of both the countries.

DG K Natarajan: Mentioned that the ICG are the fourth largest coast guard in the world. Sharing its expertise and learning from others, for safeguarding the country and prosperity. ICG functions under the Defense Ministry. However, its render services to more than ten Ministry such as Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Ministry of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Ministry of Finance (Custom Dept.) etc.

He emphasized on the role of Coastal Guards in reducing the drug and human trafficking for protecting the citizens of the country. By establishing effective communication channels between other nation coast guards. As a right information at right time to right organization is the most beneficial for all.

Heads of Coast Guards from around the world have annual meeting to discuss their expertise and learning as it is a constantly evolving field in which both side (good & bas) are try to outdo the other.

In this regard, the ICG is planning to conduct an exercise next year in which countries can participate with their ships or be as observer at the event.

HE: Acknowledged the role, which the coast guards play, and how much they are important for the world since they act as the police force in the international water. HE welcomed the suggestion of DG K Natarajan and asked him to share more information on this so that the same can be shared with UAE Ministry and the embassy will put in, its recommendation to the UAE Ministry for the same. Collaboration with the ICG will only help in strengthen the relation between the two countries and help in safeguarding the maritime economy of the region.
